Ghashiun and Hami are both Mongolian-derived names for areas of the Gobi Desert, a desert that stretches across Inner and Outer Mongolia as well as parts of Xinjiang. The most obviously Mongolian element of the Sandbenders are their names. Compared to the other subcultures of Avatar, the Sandbenders aren’t very well-developed, but there’s still some interesting cultural tidbits sprinkled throughout their episodes.
